Bunk beds are considered to be one bed on top of the other. They are made of metal or wood. There are usually
four corner posts are at each end of the frame, making the beds sturdier. There is always a ladder either attached
to one end or the other of the bed frame or one that can move from one end to the other. When you have more kids
than room you have to come with an idea where to save room and be able for each child to sleep in their own bed.
This is where the kid bunk beds come into play.
The ancient Egyptians are said to have first used the first bed using a sturdy frame and then heavy ropes were
strung from side to side. The phrase ‘Good night, sleep tight’ came from having to tighten the ropes all the time.
Of course today we no longer have to that. Kid bunk beds have become very popular though the years and are
still a good way to save room in a small bedroom, or more than two kids to a room.
When buying kid bunk beds there are a few things one should keep in mind. Be sure to ask the store if they meet
the safety standards set by the American Society of Testing Materials. Be sure the rails are strong and sturdy all
across the bed, including the head and foot boards. Think about how old the kids are, as this will help determine
what kind of bunk beds you should think about.
The slats on the kid bunk beds should be strong and don’t sag with some weight on them. They should also be
attached to the side of the frame. You certainly do not want them moving back and forth. The mattress should fit
snugly onto the frame, kind of nestled down against the bed sides.
Be sure the kid bunk beds have smooth sides, everywhere, not just on the sides. You do not want a child getting
hurt on a sharp edge. Check the ladder, it should hold your weight easily, if it does, not wobbling or bending, it
will be alright for your child. Go ahead and sit on the bottom bunk, your head should clear the top mattress. Shake
the bed, to see if it is moves easily; if it does, go to the next one. Ones that shake will not last and can
collapse on the kids.
Safety is top priority when it comes to kid bunk beds. There should be guardrails on the top bunk. Bunk beds are
good for kids older than seven years old. Do not let them play on the top bunk as they can fall off and hurt
themselves. Many will attach a battery operated night light to the ladder helping to see when the child gets up
during the night. Kid bunk beds are fun for the kids, but keep safety in mind at all times. Check to be sure all
the joints and screws are not loose.
